This bed is full size and made with local White Pine. The top is made from 3 slabs, with the outsides retaining their live edge form. Large 6 by 6 timbers are used for legs, along with skip peeled Spruce logs for angle bracing. This rustic bed is finished with Vermont Natural Coatings, creating a durable, beautiful and safe piece of furniture.
This is some rustic railing work done on a cabin in Vermont. There is a lower railing for when people are sleeping and then some saplings that shoot up higher to define the space more. There is also a rustic log Cedar ladder to access the loft. The railing material is Beech wood from the cabin property.
This Cedar King Bed was a very unusual project. I was asked to convert a queen size bed into a king size bed, so I used what parts I could and included them in the "new"king bed. It has a skip peel look and is finished with a clear Polywhey.
I just finished up this custom Cedar Settee. It is designed to be outdoors and has a great look with the bark left on. The back features mortise and tenon joints and the seat is half log Cedar. Exterior deck and stainless screws are used for connections. It is finished with Tung Oil for extra protection from the elements.
This bench is very functional with a timeless Adirondack look.

Mark recently facilitated a Rustic Furniture Building Workshop at Snowfarm in Williamsgurg, MA.
This 2 day, weekend workshop allowed participants to build a rustic furniture project from start to finish. Students made functional, artistic furniture for their own homes/gardens, which included benches and a chair made from White Birch. This is Mark's second visit to run the workshop at Snowfarm.

Earth Day was started in 1970, as a way to bring more attention to the beauty and the struggles of our natural environment. Please take a moment to reflect on some of your favorite outdoor places on this planet, and give some thought to ways you can help protect it. At Wilderness Creations, this is part of our daily business. We strive to reduce our impact and help support organizations that work tirelessly to guard our fragile resources. Enjoy your day!
Eco friendly is a term that you hear a lot these days, but it has always been a part of rustic style furniture! It's not used just for marketing and sales, for hundreds of years people have made furniture with the resources that they have had accessible. When rustic and Adirondack style furniture started to be produced for larger markets, as opposed to oneself or one homeowner, it was still made using sustainable resources. For example, furniture that is made from tree saplings. Saplings, such as Hickory, grow very fast and therefore, can be harvested in the same area over and over again. They can also be salvaged from other clearings. Another example is furniture that is made from dead, standing trees. Sometimes it is a natural death, other times it is due to fire or disease, but harvesting these to make way for new growth and cut down on fuel for wildfires is a responsible and beneficial use of the wood. Most rustic furniture makers are very aware of other environmental issues, such as cutting down on waste, reducing electric and fuel use, and utilizing wood waste. Another way that rustic furniture builders are environmentally responsible is by using non (or very low) toxic finishes on their products. This is good for the environment, the people applying them, the people putting them in their homes, as well as pets, children, etc...
