Colorado Rustic

I have enjoyed and appreciated rustic furniture for a long time, but I didn't start actually building it until 1998 when I moved to Durango, Colorado. It is a beautiful area with gorgeous natural beauty. What better place to get into rustic furniture building? I found a place located outside of Durango in the town of Mancos that built Aspen furniture, and asked them if I could help and learn. I wasn't too concerned about pay as much as learning the craft. The guys that ran the shop, Dan and Bill, were very patient and very helpful. They were making some wonderful, one of a kind furniture pieces in the Rustic Style workshop. It didn't take long until I was a helpful, contributing part of the crew there. Unfortunately, I wasn't in the Durango/Mancos area too long, so I didn't stay on with Rustic Style past the spring. At that time I headed back to New England where I have lived ever since. I look back fondly on those times and I am thankful for the group at Rustic Style that really got me started in the rustic furniture business.

Checking

Natural rustic furniture is going to have some checking (or cracks) that develop as the wood releases moisture. Wood species behave differently as this drying takes place. Some woods won't do much checking while others will show substantial cracks, however this is a natural process and will not affect the strength of the log (or furniture piece) itself. Smaller diameter woods such as Hickory saplings or bent Willow twigs usually do not show evidence of checking. If this look is something that really bothers you then you may want to stay away from bulky log furniture and go with smaller sapling construction. Some of the larger log furniture like Cedar, Lodge Pole Pine, and Aspen will show evidence of checking, but in a lot of ways it is just another character feature of rustic furniture. Each log will be different and unique, and natural in appearance. So, don't fight it or worry that your furniture is going to fall apart. It is natural and it is part of the rustic charm.

Go Rustic!

Why "Go Rustic"? Well, I'm not one that get's too caught up in trends or the latest great thing. I usually wait and see how it looks, how it works, or is it really needed. Let's face it, modern furniture is going to look ridiculous a few years down the road. Why keep redoing things over and over. Go with a classic, timeless look that will work for decades. That's a good investment with real value. That's what the rustic style brings, quality, beauty, and a look that will be appreciated for generations. So, don't just jump on "the bandwagon" now and then have to throw it all away when it becomes outdated. Just do it right the first time, with a look that is natural and comfortable. You'll love it and so will your family and guests, so that's why you should "Go Rustic"!

Repairing Light Scratches on Rustic Furniture

No matter how hard we try our furniture is going to get scratched. Many times it is when we are moving items into the house for the first time, just to make it extra frustrating. After investing in high quality furniture you want to keep it looking great, so a little bit of time doing some repairs is well worth the effort. In this piece I am just going to look at very light scratches. Scratches can come from something rough sliding over the top, dragging something by that bumps in, maybe you scrape the legs with the vacuum, it can happen easily in a million different ways. And it is not only in the soft woods, the hard woods will scratch through the finish and still look scuffed up. For light scratches, try taking some wood finish oil on a rag and rubbing it over the spot. I have got some light colored, danish oil around the shop that I often use. When you rub it over it will fall into the scratch and soak into the spot that has lost it's finish, but it will wipe off easily from the other parts. Sometimes this is enough to make the scratch less visible and not catch any one's eye. A tung oil works well too, and there is a dark and a lighter color so that you can best match to your original finish. For other shades or colors you can try using a matching stain and just do the same thing, a little bit of wiping with a rag over the spot. Of course you always want to be careful and dispose of your oily rags properly, so that they do not catch fire. Another thing you can try is a furniture repair pen or similar product that is made for hiding scratches. Look in you hardware store for these, in the area where you would find wood glue and filler. I have a set that was very inexpensive and has three different shades, so I can best match the finish on the damaged item. It is basically a magic marker that you draw over the scratch. I like to immediately follow with a towel so that I can wipe off the excess around the scratch before it dries. Because of the depth of the scrape you should be able to wipe without taking it out of the repair line. That is just a couple of ideas for repairing light scratches on your rustic and Adirondack furniture pieces. Later I will cover deeper scratches and cracks. www.RusticFurnitureGallery.com

Rustic Travel

We were fortunate to be able to travel to Belize recently, and we loved it! If you love the rustic style and living simply then this might be a good destination for you as well. Many of the resorts there are different than other Caribbean destinations. There are many small resorts that offer a private cabanas, but also have there own activities, restaurants, and bars. When I say small I am talking like 8 cabins. Of course there are some larger resorts and there are starting to be more that have taller condo style accommodations. I hope that not too many of these developments take place because it will change the flavor of this special country. The jungle lodges of the San Ignacio and Pine Mountain area are mostly all this type of resort with small cabanas for a couple or for a family. The owners and staff that we came into contact with were very friendly and truly cared about your experience and the service that they provided. There are wonderful activities such as visiting Mayan ruins, hiking, canoeing, cave tubing, swimming, cave exploration, and so on. The photo above was taken in this area at a resort called the Mariposa, and it only had about 7 of these stick sided thatched roof huts. They look primitive from the outside but they are very comfortable and clean. Because there isn't much near by these jungle destinations we would eat right at their dining rooms, which really is nice. Meet other travelers and have a great Belizian meal, just steps from your room. The top photo was taken at a rental house in San Pedro, on Ambergris Caye. The interior was done in all custom rustic furniture that made me feel right at home.

Other places we stayed were the Crooked Tree Lodge, the Mystic River Lodge, the Maya Mountain Lodge, Tradewinds Cruise Club, and in the village of Placencia. We visited many other lodges and restaurants so let me know if you are looking for other suggestions of places to visit in Belize. It is a great country to visit but do your homework and speak with others that have been there before. You'll want to have a good plan so that you can enjoy the country to the fullest.

Happy Travels!

Wilderness Creations To Be Featured in NASE Magazine

My 11/17/10 post contains interview questions and answers that I provided for an upcoming article in the March/April issue of Self Employed Magazine. Please check out that post to learn more about myself and our business.
For the upcoming article, we recently had a photo shoot with a professional photographer from Portsmouth, NH. I figured that someone would stop by and take a couple photos of the store and the furniture, for the article. It wound up being much more than that. There was a crew of three, including the photographer, an assistant and an intern. The process lasted three hours, with photos outside, and in different parts of the gallery. They had all kinds of equipment. There were lights, computers, back ground materials, light sensors, and on and on. I have never done anything like that. The photographer would tell us to pose in certain ways and adjust us ever so slightly for the next shot. We stood outside with out coats in ridiculous temperatures to get the outdoor shots. It was really a fun time and very interesting to see how much goes into professional photos. Of course we haven't seen any of the pictures, so we are hoping that they choose some good ones, since it will be sent out to thousands of people. We shall see.
The photographer was Bill Truslow of Bill Truslow Photography, based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He was really nice to work with and very good at his profession. http://www.truslowphoto.com/
We hope that the article (and photos) comes out well. I will keep you posted and let you know how it goes.

The feeling of Rustic

As I was organizing some photos the other day I came across a series of pictures that I took last fall. I thought that they really captured the feeling of rustic. We take photos everyday of furniture in the gallery, to use for marketing and websites, and although they show the items well they don't necessarily convey the true feeling of the rustic style. In this photo you see Tasha sitting in an Old Hickory Hoop Rocker that is probably 60+ years old. There is a rustic coffee table and a couple of other old rockers. The field stone fireplace with the nature painting and rustic frame give the perfect place to gather. It looks warm, inviting, comfortable, and relaxing. Reading instead of TV or computers. I thought that this photo really did catch a moment of what rustic is all about. You can put yourself in that moment and feel a sense of calm, with a nice deep breath and the stresses of life being left behind. Try to search out your own times to live rustic, you'll be glad you did.

In The Workshop

Another custom order that I recently completed is a large armoire. It was made out of rough cut, ship lap Pine. I got the wood from a local mill. Of course this wood had warps and twists that added to the challenge of building. The inside is a smoother side of the wood that I attached with copper head nails. I left the inside natural so that it would be a bit brighter for finding clothes. The top was attached with steel cut nails for an older look. In this case I tried to make it look more like old barn wood, so I stained it. It took a couple of tries to find the stain that looked the best, but in the end I think it does have a nice old barn wood look to it. I used black iron strap hinges on the doors, also to give it a more authentic look. The doors are made from wider (15") Pine, one board for each door. One cool rustic feature on this cabinet was using a natural burl for the door handles. The whole piece was finished with a couple coats of a natural poly whey. I was very pleased with how it came out, let me know what you think.

Rustic Birch Bark Frame

I recently completed this Birch Bark frame for a customer of ours. I made the base of the frame out of rough cut Pine and stained it dark. The corners are at 45 degree angles and joined with biscuits. The customer wanted as much Birch Bark as possible showing on this size frame. In this case I used 1/4" dowels instead of twigs so that more attention would go to the bark and not to natural shaped twigs. I stained the dowels and attached them with brass head nails. It is a great match for this Owl photo and matting.

Stowe, Vermont.

The new lodge at Spruce Peak in, Stowe VT, is quite spectacular. It is huge, and well designed. There are beautiful views and outdoor activities right out the door. The lodge is filled with rustic Hickory furniture and other great rustic accents and furniture. The benches, the chairs, the bar stools and so on. The lighting is high quality and attractive. You know that the designers had great confidence in the furniture if they were willing to put it into that challenging environment. Thousands of people each day pass through there with their wet jackets and rugged ski boots.

I have been visiting Stowe for over 25 years now, and enjoy every visit. We have family that has lived and worked in town for 20 years, which has helped us to know the town and it's people. Our rustic style furniture and home accents are a perfect fit with the Stowe way of life. A natural, outdoor feel with the highest quality. The residents and visitors to Stowe are people who enjoy and respect their natural surroundings, but also understand quality and value. Wilderness Creations offers rustic and Adirondack style furniture that is built to last, so now you can add a touch of the Spruce Peak Lodge at Stowe to your own home.

Rustic Office Furniture

Rustic Furniture = More Creativity

Make your workplace a more beautiful, more creative, and more productive space, with high quality furniture. It's easy and quick to run down to your local office supply store for a new desk, but is it going to last, is it going to inspire? No is the answer. Shouldn't you invest in quality? This is where you and others in the business do their work, all day, everyday. You put great thought into your other business investments, such as marketing, advertising, technology and so forth. The furnishings in your workplace also deserve careful consideration. You and your work team should be comfortable and energized. The natural forms of rustic and Adirondack furniture will help the creativity flow. You don't have to spend your day worrying if your desk is going to collapse if you add one more sliver of paper. Handcrafted and made with pride in the USA, this furniture will last. I recently got this message from a friend: "Work gave me a new desk, the press-wood is so permeated with s*#% my head hurts, nose is dry, and eyes are watering. Nasty s#!*." You get the idea. How is that a good idea for work or home? A pressed board, glued, filled with chemicals, made in China, ugly desk. Give it some thought and take some time to choose a nice desk for your workplace. You spend a lot of time there and want to do your best work. And don't forget a good comfortable chair to go with it.
