Barn Board Dining Table

Authentic Barn Wood Table Top.

This is a recently completed, custom table top. Made from wonderful, old barn floor boards. I was fortunate to have 3 matching boards from the same structure. They are thick, wide, and loaded with history, such as worn down areas from years of use, wooden peg holes, and paint spills. The widest board is about 15" and together the total width is 40". The length is 7'. I chose to put 2" breadboard ends on to cover the cut ends and give it a nice finished look. I attached them with long screws and then pegged the screw holes to go with the look of the old boards.

The top is finished with 5 coats of Vermont Natural Coatings clear finish (top photo).
The top is going to be attached to an industrial style, pipe base and used as a dining table.

Finishing a Rustic Wood Coffee Table.

In order to make this large, odd shaped table top easier to work on, I simply put it on a lazy susan. I had the hardware to make one and placed it under the wood so that I could apply finish to the sides without having to move the piece of wood or work my way around the table in my full workshop. This little trick worked great! Adding coats of finish went quickly and safely, without missing any spots.
I used a similar method to work on the odd shaped stump base, but in this case I used a roller platform that is used for moving snowmobiles and things of that nature. I could stand in one spot and spin the rustic stump to apply the coats, instead of trying to reach around.

"Forever Home"

I recently heard someone use the term "forever home", the last home that they would want to purchase. They have done enough moving and are ready to just settle in and enjoy. There comes a point where you have moved for work, traveled, researched towns, and lived in enough houses to know what will be comfortable, affordable, and maintainable. Perhaps it just comes down to relationships with your family and friends and you don't want to distance yourself from those relationships any more. You've found that "forever home" and you can't stand the excitement of moving in and setting up. So, why would you want to furnish a forever home with cheap, temporary furniture? Do it right, this is your special place where you will spend countless hours. Don't run out to Walmart to buy a desk that will fall apart in a couple years. Don't settle for ugly, beat up furnishings that don't convey warmth and comfort. Furnish your forever home with forever furniture and accessories! You are worth it, you've worked hard and you know what you want. Make it all yours and make it unique and special, so that you can enjoy it everyday.

We are proud to announce that we have added a new craftsman to our gallery. Eduardo Ornazabal is a talented rustic furniture maker that has been creating furniture for over 20 years! He now works from his workshop in Lincoln, New Hampshire. The table shown has a beautiful reclaimed Cherry top and drawer fronts. These live edge pieces were saved from a Northern New Hampshire barn. The base is painted pine that offers a distressed, antique look. This is just one of the pieces from Eduardo here at the gallery. Happy Earth Day!

Another Earth Day is upon us. It is a reminder to celebrate the natural beauty of the Earth, as well as a time to reflect on how we as humans affect the fragile eco systems around us. Is nature just something for us to own and use or should we, with all of our intellect and wisdom, feel responsibility to take care of this gift we have been given? It is tough to resist the sales pitches and to step back and ask if we really need a bigger house, a larger car, and all of the things that are pushed on us. Do we need to be running here and there and driving countless hours? It's all about balance I guess. If we all had a caring and a balance and put thought into conservation then I think we really could make a big difference. In the end it is about us as individuals and the choices we make. Little changes do help. You don't necessarily have to be out protesting a mine or giving speeches at gatherings, you just need to care, and make the little efforts that you feel will help. Voting matters, volunteering matters, giving financially matters, writing to government officials matters, and your daily habits matter. It's easy to get angry and frustrated with the lack of leadership and the corporate mentality, but if we can all find a little more balance and put in a little more effort then we can make a difference. You don't need wealth to recycle or turn off some lights, you just need to care. It's the right thing to do, not just for the Earth but for ourselves as well. Our health depends on clean air and water and less chemicals. Sure, maybe we are so smart that we will come up with ways to turn the global warming problem around, but is that really intelligence to just sit back and hope for innovation? Why not use our common sense and avoid the problems in the first place? Many people make New Year's resolutions, changes in behavior to try and better themselves. Perhaps we should all make Earth Day resolutions to try and take better care of our surroundings. We can't just float along and keep up our old ways, the climate, the storms, the illnesses are all telling us to wise up. So, head to one of your favorite outdoor spots today (and as often as possible) and celebrate, but also acknowledge the fragility of that space, and what it may need to remain natural and beautiful.

Custom Adirondack Signs

I just finished up a custom order for 3 signs for a client in New York. The project took place over the course of two months, and I am very pleased with how they all came out. There were two of these "No Trespassing" signs that are 32"h by 26"w, overall. The base is made from 1" shiplap Pine that is finished with a brown exterior stain. Birch sticks and twigs are used for the border and letters, laid over White Birch bark. The border sticks are predrilled and screwed on with exterior screws and the letters are attached with brad nails. Leaving some overhang on the top and bottom borders and leaving some of the branches intact adds further character. I added some small twig accents on the corners as well. The signs are finished with exterior PolyWhey to give them added protection in their outdoor location.

Working with Weathered Barn Wood.

One of the added challenges of working with old, weathered wood, compared to new lumber, is what to do with the areas that you have cut. Sometimes you can work your design to fit the size of the boards   (assuming you have that design freedom) but you will always need to make some cuts of the barn wood. There are multiple ways you can approach this challenge and on some projects you may use several of these methods.
The border on the the piece above uses 45 degree cuts which leaves all of the outside, visible edge being the weathered wood. If you had a solid barn wood top then you could use this method and cover the cuts of the inside top boards.
Another way to approach this is to use "bread board ends" which utilizes a thinner piece of your matching wood to cover the cut ends. So, you could make your top with as many boards as you need (depending on the size of the table) and then cut a strip off of another matching aged board to cover your two ends that have the exposed wood. On the drawer above I used some very thin strips (around 1/2") to cover the cut ends. Thoroughly glue and nail the ends on for a secure attachment. It makes for a very nice, finished look.
There also will be times, when working with barn wood, that you may need to cover a spot with some stain to match. You want to minimize this if possible because it just doesn't work as well and feels a bit less authentic. But, if you need to cover some ends, take your time in matching the color and feel of the wood. Practice on matching wood scraps to get your color and methods as close as possible. You don't want to put stain on too thick, I find that lightly rubbing the stain in with a cloth works nicely.
Other hints for working with barn wood furniture:
If you just want to bring down some sharp edges on corners or tops, you can use a small hammer and dent them in. I like this method since the wood is already distressed and that is the look you are going for anyway. Just tap it until you have softened the edge to the desired point, this way it keeps it's matching weathered look and you do not need to worry about it standing out from sanding through the aged layers.
Be careful to remove the worst of the splinter areas. You don't want anyone picking up a splinter or catching clothes on the wood, etc… Go over the whole project and check for spots that may be a problem and then (if you want this look) add a clear finish to the furniture. Think about the look you want and go with the sheen that best fits that, and remember that each coat will add to the sheen. The finish helps to lock in small splinters and loose wood while also making the piece easier to clean. The extra protection will cut down on stains and scrapes that may get through the aged layer of wood.

I hope these little suggestions help, please feel free to email me with further questions or if any clarifying of topics is needed.
