In The Workshop

In the workshop at this time I am getting started on some natural tree curtain rods and hooks. This is a great way to add a rustic look to a room. For this customer I have chosen to use Maple for both the rustic rods and hooks, and I will leave the bark on. I have cut the rods from trees that are fairly young and straight. They were growing in an area that was cleared but then left to grow back in, so the trees are pretty tight together. The diameter is about 1 1/2 " and they will be about 4 ' long. The hooks will be one piece where a branch was growing from the tree and the rod will sit upon one at each end of the window opening. The customer is then going to make her own curtains that will slide over the rod. Of course, these will not be completely straight and that is part of the rustic charm. As I mentioned, the bark will be left on and then I am going to put a completely environmentally safe and non toxic clear finish on which will protect the wood for easy clean up but also darken the wood a bit. That's my current project along with starting to collect wood for another Adirondack table I hope to start soon, but I'll fill you in on that later. I'll try to post some pictures of the rustic curtain rods and hooks when I get them done.

Power Tenon Cutter

Set of Tenon Cutters and an example of a stick cut with the tenon cutter.

Tenon Cutters

Tenon cutters are a great tool for the rustic woodworker. Yes you can make nice tenons by hand using a draw knife but the cutters can be very handy and fast, and make a nice looking, consistent tenon for your rustic projects. I purchased a set from Lee Valley and Veritas that included six tenon cutters ranging in size from 5/8" to 2". They are light weight and fit into a standard drill or drill press. I typically use mine in my 18 volt cordless Dewalt driver and they work quite nicely. On many occasions you may need to bring down the wood's end diameter to get it closer to the tenon size which you can do using a draw knife. These hand held cutters can get to be more challenging and a bit more work when you get up into the 2" range because of the wood size but they still are quicker and give you a nice even tenon. The cutters also feature a built in level so that you can get your tenon going the proper direction. There is always some "eye balling" that goes on when doing it free hand without a guide, but you can usually get them close enough that you can make small adjustments when it is in the mortise hole, by turning the wood to the spot where it fits best for your project. There are several other companies that make this type of tenon cutter, such as Bosworth, Blue Ox, and Northwest. At Lee Valley the cost of these cutters ranges from $87 for the 5/8 up to $109 for the 2", but they do offer sets that can save you a bit of money. I found them well worth the cost and I have had mine for about 8 years, with no problems. So, have fun making your rustic furniture and try out some tenon cutters for a beautiful and secure log/stick connection.

Copper as an accent on rustic furniture.

Copper is a great accent to use on rustic style projects. Copper is one of the most beautiful metals and it goes very well, in my opinion, with twigs, birch bark, barn wood, and other rustic furniture materials. So, what is the best way to incorporate copper into your home projects? What I do is I buy copper flashing at the local hardware store. No, it’s not cheap but the metal itself will probably hold it’s value no matter what you do with it. It comes in different widths and in various length rolls, used by builders to protect areas on roofs and other spots where water can get to the building. Once you have purchased your copper you can cut it with shears that can also be purchased at any hardware or home improvement store. As with anything, it will pay to get a good solid pair of shears because they will last longer and cut easier. I like to add copper accents on to my mirror/picture frame projects, along with twigs and White Birch bark. Sometimes I keep it new and shiny and other times I leave it outside until it tarnishes and looks older. Another way to prepare the copper is by banging it with a rounded hammer to give it the old pounded look (you will see examples of this in the accompanying photos). This takes a bit of time to get it completely pounded and looking somewhat authentic but it is fun to see it start to fill in and come together. When applying the copper to your project you want to glue it in place and then you will also cover the edges and hold it down with logs, twigs, or whatever material you are working with. This will hold it securely in place as well as hide the edges. It’s really as simple as that. You can add some wonderful copper accents to your project and it will be pretty straight forward. I do not put any special finish on the copper I just let it change as it may over time, but if you need to spray a finish of some type over the bark or twigs it is fine to go over the copper as well. Good luck with your rustic/Adirondack home project and please let me know if you have any thoughts or questions on using copper to cover flat areas.

Wilderness Creations looks forward to showing and promoting other local artists from the Monadnock Region, in the near future. The holiday season at Wilderness Creations

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and were able to spend time with loved ones. I was fortunate enough to be able to spend the whole week with my entire family. We all went to Jamaica to celebrate my mother's 70th birthday, as well as Thanksgiving. My father put the whole trip together and it really was perfect. We stayed at a wonderful resort that was friendly and safe, and enjoyed beautiful sunny skies every day. The resort was the Half Moon, near Montego Bay. Our days were relaxing, spending time by the pools, playing tennis, and just enjoying our surroundings and each other. It is really important and fun to get away from home and work for a while. Leave it behind and have a good time.
Now it is back to work. We have increased our hours at the Gallery for the holiday season, and we are advertising a sale right up until Christmas. Everything in stock will be at least 20% off (except for consignment items). On December 12th we will be hosting an art show, featuring the paintings of Toni Garland. Please give us a call if you are interested in attending and we can add you to the list 603-563-7010.
In addition we will be collecting food for our local food banks, all month long. There are many people struggling right now with very basic needs and we want to collect as much as possible to help out in our area. Especially during the holidays, everyone deserves a good meal, so please drop off your food items or donations at the Wilderness Creations Gallery, located at 1327, Rt. 101, in Dublin, NH. We thank you in advance for your generosity.

In the Workshop

Greetings! Just completed, this is a rustic armoire/cabinet for hanging jackets and putting boots etc... It was a custom order for a family that needed some storage in a small living space. It is made out of local White Pine rough cut shiplap boards. The outside is rougher and the inside is smooth. It was made to look as if it could have been made long ago, when people had to make there own things and cared more about function than impressing the neighbors. The wood has slight variations in thickness, as well as saw marks and weathered areas. It stands over 70" tall with a wood rod inside to hang clothes. The finish on this rustic project is a single coat of spar urethane that will darken over time. To check out more great rustic furnishings visit our website www.RusticFurnitureGallery.com

Barnwood Side Table

This is a barn wood side table that I made from wonderful old wood. The drawer pulls out so that you can display items on the drawer bottom which can then be seen through the glass on the top. This was a custom order which I designed. The client gave the table as a gift to a friend, complete with display items that were meaningful in their relationship. It features a natural stick drawer pull made from a juniper bush. There is really something special about the weathered/barn wood style. The history of the wood becomes part of the new piece of furniture. Wilderness Creations carries a great line of barn wood furniture that comes from reclaimed tobacco barns. This furniture is very strong and rugged, but has lovely craftsmanship and details, such as pegs and wood drawer pulls. Visit our gallery to see some examples of this barnwood furniture. Hey Mark,
I was just going through this summers photos and came across a pic of your benches.
Thought you would be happy to know that after 11 years, they are still sturdy and beautiful!!!!
They are outside all summer and put under cover in the winter.
I hope all is well with you all up on the hill.
Hello to everyone,
KAREN

I built these benches for an all boys summer camp in Maine back in the nineties, so you know they have seen some abuse in all those years.
Please email me and let me know how your Wilderness Creations furniture is doing, we would love to hear from you.

Go Rustic!

Go Rustic is a term we began using for our business many years ago, because we felt that it said alot. When you "go rustic" you are enjoying the simple things in life and getting back to nature. Appreciate the beauty and functionality of the rustic style of furniture and of living. When you bring rustic into your life, you are taking a deep breath and creating a relaxing environment, one where you can enjoy your time and your family. Let time slow and stop running for a bit so that you can appreciate the truly important things in life. These days, things can get crazy fast. And we all get caught up in it and it gets more and more out of control. With rustic style furnishings you can create a special place where you feel more relaxed and more connected. You don't have to own a second home to add a rustic flare. You can do it in your full time home, and why wouldn't you? That's where you spend a huge amount of your time. Create a rustic room, full of character and warmth, or an outdoor sitting area, or redo the whole feel of the house. Try adding some small accessories or one piece of furniture and see if it makes a difference in your home. Think about it and Go Rustic!

The room came out great and fits in well with the historic character of the lake home, which was built in the early 1900's.

To check out more of Steel Partners offerings you can visit our website at http://www.rusticfurnituregallery.com/home.php?cat=45 Steel Partners is located in Chehalis, Washington and all of their products are hand crafted in the USA!

The Lakeside Living Show in Gilford New Hampshire was a huge success. It was a great venue for all of the various displays. We had two booths indoors and a large deck space outdoors to display all of the rustic/Adirondack pieces we had brought. The picture above shows an Old Hickory sofa, side table and coffee table from the Woodland Collection. This sofa is available in many choices of fabric and leather. Below is an Old Hickory Rocking Chair, Barn board entertainment center and many rustic home accessories.

Outdoors we displayed many of our Cedar Furniture with cushions. We met many great people and talked with visitors about their homes and the rustic items they would like to add. Look for the Lakeside Living Expo next summer, it's worth a visit.

Custom Rustic Furniture

I have been building rustic furniture for clients for over ten years. Customers have certain spaces that require specific dimensions and they have something in mind for the space. I work with people to come up with ideas that will work in these areas. Some of my customers give very little input and just let me go for it. Basically, what is the purpose of the piece of furniture and what are the size limitations. From there, I work on designs that I think would please the home owner. I build custom rustic furniture here in my workshop in Dublin, New Hampshire, as well as doing rustic built in work on site. From rustic trim to Adirondack furnishings, Wilderness Creations can help you with your remodels and upgrades. Give me (Mark) a call at 603-563-7010 to discuss your ideas or to set up an appointment.

Lakeside Living Expo

We just returned from the Lakeside Living Expo in Gilford NH. The show went well and there were some great artists and companies showing their goods. The show was at Gunstock Mountain which was a very nice venue for this event. We brought lots of our furniture and accessories to show, with two booths indoors and a huge outdoor space on the deck where we offered outdoor cedar furniture. These events are a ton of work (probably adds up to over 130 hours) but we were able to meet and speak with many people that we otherwise couldn't have. Hopefully all that work will pay off with some new customers and clients. We plan to do the Lakeside Living Expo again next year and think that it is a great event to visit. I will post some pictures of the show soon.

Supporting Local Businesses

Times are tough right now. I have never been through an economic time like this in my lifetime, and it is scary. As a small business owner it is very challenging because we understand that you need to think carefully about your purchases. We have alot of overhead and expenses to deal with but we still try our best to provide good value, by keeping prices fair and offering superior quality and customer service. Now more than ever we need to support our local businesses and our local workers. The products that we sell that are made in America are being handcrafted by people who care about quality. There is a job provided and money that will stay in the country. I just read an article that stated that for every $100. spent in independently owned stores, $68. returns to the community through payroll, taxes, and so forth. If you spend that same $100. in a national chain store then only $43. remains in the community, and of course when you buy online nothing goes to your home community. I think those are pretty impressive numbers. You can add on that local businesses support local charities and events. So, if these small businesses can't make it then it really does affect the whole community, whether or not you need their particular product or service. Give it some thought and see if there are any local stores that you would like operating well into the future, and if so then stop by for a visit and let them know that there business is important and maybe even purchase a little something, because after all, a good chunk of that money will stay in your community and help make it a better place to live.

Custom Handles and drawer pulls

Greetings! I just returned from Maine where I installed some stick closet handles and birch cabinet handles, in a new bathroom of an old summer home. Wilderness Creations also provided the lights, towel bars, and mirror for the project. It all came out beautifully and the owners are very pleased with the room. The rustic closet handles are made from small Maple saplings which I peeled, and they have a wonderful natural bend to them. I left them a little longer to give them even more character. The rustic cabinet handles are from small Birch trees and I added a small stick to bring them out from the cabinet door. The stick goes into the handle which was drilled out. This gives space to easily grab the handle. Another project for this home was a fun little croquet table. The customer found an old croquet rack which still had the balls and a wonderful color from decades of use. I added a small pine top with bread board ends and stained it to match the base. I put the original handle back on and it now makes a great table on the porch to serve appetizers and beverages. It's an unusual piece that will get lots of comments from visitors. All of the projects came out well and just enhanced the great character of the property.

It has just been unbelievable how much rain we have gotten in the last month. Things have not had a chance to dry out at all. It will change at some point so we just need to hang on until then.
Take care and have a great weekend!

Cabin Living

It can be quite surprising sometimes just how well you can live in a small space. A little cabin can make a great getaway, but at the same time be easy and affordable to maintain. So you can spend your time enjoying the outdoors and special family time, instead of working on your list of things to do. As a weekend retreat, you really can be quite comfortable in as little as 600 square feet, give or take. It keeps the family close and makes a nice shelter from the weather but you will spend most of the time outdoors. Go off the grid and save more money with less bills. It is a great opportunity to remind yourselves of what is most important and how many things we use in our daily lives really are just luxuries. Gathering water and preparing food become close family activities. In the evenings you can play games, read, or have a nice chat, instead of watching TV. The warm glow of candlelight will relax you before a restful sleep. That is what a weekend retreat is all about. Getting away to rejuvenate and enjoy your family in a special, natural setting.

Rustic

1942 Century Dictionary Definition

Rustic; made or built in the country fashion or of simple materials, after a plain or rude design, made of roughly dressed limbs or roots of trees, as summer-houses, garden seats…….Rusticate To go to the country; stay or sojourn in the country. Rustication The act of rusticating, or the state of being rusticated; Rusticity The state or quality of being rustic; rural character or life.

Vacation Home.

Vacation homes and rustic retreats are very special places, especially these days. Our days seem to get faster and more busy and stressful, but when you go to your cottage or cabin away from it all you can hopefully relax and rejuvenate. That is what they are for and the payoff for the hard work. These get a ways don't need to be extravagant, just peaceful and comfortable. A place where the phone isn't always ringing and the computer isn't always on, where the entertainment is the wildlife and the sunsets. To call some place a retreat really says it all. It's a special escape from life's daily stresses. As we move into summer, I hope you all have a chance to get away and reflect and relax, whether it is at your own second home or out on a vacation. Enjoy!
